Bolgheri: Where Wine Meets the Sea

Bolgheri is an exceptional wine region in Tuscany. Picture rolling vineyards, Mediterranean scrubland, centuries-old olive groves, and a spectacular coastline. Yes, the Mediterranean Sea is just a few kilometres away!

We love Chianti Classico, Montalcino, and the beautiful Langhe region in Piedmont. Each has its own extraordinary landscapes, wines, and stories to tell. But there is something truly magical about exploring vineyards with a view of the sea.

And that's one of the things that makes Bolgheri so special.

Guests arriving in Livorno on a cruise ship are already very aware of our proximity to the coast. After all, they've just sailed across the Mediterranean to reach us! But for those flying into Tuscany and travelling through its countryside, it's easy to forget just how close Bolgheri is to the sea.

And sometimes, even we forget to make the most of it!

A Special Request from London

Last September, we received a rather unusual request from a group of visitors from London. They wanted to enjoy a private wine tour in Bolgheri, but with a little twist: ending the day on the beach with a sunset aperitivo.

And we thought, why haven't we done this before?

After all, the sea is such an important part of Bolgheri's identity.

During our wine tours, we constantly talk about the influence of the Mediterranean, the cooling sea breezes, the islands of the Tuscan Archipelago, and the Venturi effect that helps channel the winds through our coastal landscape.

These natural elements contribute to Bolgheri's distinctive microclimate, moderating summer temperatures, encouraging air circulation through the vineyards, and playing an important role in the slow, balanced ripening of the grapes.

The sea isn't simply a beautiful backdrop. It's part of what makes Bolgheri wines what they are.

We explain all of this to our guests, often while standing among the vines, looking towards the blue Mediterranean in the distance.

And yet, despite talking about the sea almost every day, the idea of actually ending a wine tour on the beach had never really crossed our minds!

From the Vineyards to the Beach

Well, our London guests changed that.

After a wonderful day exploring wineries, tasting exceptional wines, meeting local producers, and discovering the stories behind Bolgheri, we headed towards the coast.

Just a short drive from the vineyards, the landscape changes. The rows of vines give way to Mediterranean pine forests, sandy beaches, and the open sea.

And there we were, enjoying a sunset aperitivo with our guests.

The sound of the waves, the golden evening light, a glass of wine in hand, and the sun slowly disappearing over the horizon.

It was simply magical.

Not because it was extravagant or complicated, but because it felt so natural. The perfect way to bring together everything we'd been talking about throughout the day: the vineyards, the climate, the Mediterranean, and the wines shaped by this extraordinary place.

The Sea Is Also on Our Plates

And the Mediterranean's influence doesn't stop in the vineyards. It's also very much present on our tables!

While Tuscany is often associated with hearty meat dishes, wild boar, and Bistecca alla Fiorentina, here along the coast, seafood is part of our everyday food culture.

Our local restaurants celebrate the catch of the day, and the beauty is that Bolgheri wines are wonderful companions to these dishes.

A fresh, mineral Vermentino with the day's catch, perhaps simply grilled with a drizzle of local extra virgin olive oil. A glass of Bolgheri Rosato with grilled shrimp or locally caught tuna. And why not an everyday Bolgheri Rosso with a steaming bowl of cacciucco, our traditional Livornese fish stew, rich with tomatoes, garlic, and the flavours of the sea?

Yes, red wine with fish! Why not? Especially when the dish has enough character to stand up to it.

These are the pairings we love: uncomplicated, rooted in local traditions, and meant to be enjoyed slowly, preferably with a view of the Mediterranean.

It's another reminder that in Bolgheri, the connection between land and sea isn't just about geography or climate. It's a way of life.

And when you can experience all of this in a single day — vineyards, exceptional wines, delicious coastal cuisine, and a sunset on the beach — you begin to understand what makes our little corner of Tuscany so special.

Sometimes Our Guests Inspire Us

That September afternoon reminded us of something important.

We spend so much time designing bespoke wine experiences, selecting wineries, introducing guests to passionate winemakers, and sharing our knowledge of Bolgheri that sometimes we overlook the simplest pleasures right on our doorstep.

Our London visitors reminded us to see our own region through fresh eyes.

And that's one of the things we love most about our work. Every tour is different, every guest brings a new perspective, and sometimes the best ideas come from the people we welcome.

Because Bolgheri isn't just about extraordinary wines. It's about the landscape, the people, the Mediterranean Sea, and the moments that bring them all together.

So next time you think about a wine tour in Tuscany, remember that in Bolgheri you can spend the morning among Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot vineyards, enjoy a delicious Tuscan lunch, discover another beautiful winery in the afternoon, and still make it to the beach in time for sunset.

Not many famous wine regions can offer that!

And perhaps the perfect ending to a Bolgheri wine tour isn't another glass in a tasting room, but a glass of wine with your feet in the sand.

Wine, sea & sunset. That's Bolgheri, our way.
