From My Birthplace to My Home: A Wine Journey from Livorno to Bolgheri 

Private Shore Excursion from Livorno Port: Bolgheri & the Super Tuscans

There is something particularly special to me about welcoming guests who arrive by cruise ship at the Port of Livorno.

Livorno is my birthplace. Bolgheri is my home.

Every time our guests step off a ship in Livorno and travel south along the Tuscan coast to spend the day with us, I feel that they are following a small part of my own journey — from the city where I was born to the wine region that has become such an important part of my life.

And perhaps this is why our Livorno shore excursions have always felt a little more personal to me.

From Livorno, South Instead of North

For most cruise passengers arriving in Livorno, the instinct is to head north or inland: Florence, Pisa, Lucca, San Gimignano.

All wonderful places. But there is another Tuscany waiting in the opposite direction.

Travel south for less than an hour and the landscape begins to change. The Mediterranean is never far away, the hills become gentler, vineyards appear, and eventually you arrive in the countryside surrounding Bolgheri.

This is the Tuscany I love sharing with our guests.

It is quieter and more intimate, but its wines have made this tiny corner of the Tuscan coast famous throughout the world.

This is the land of Bolgheri DOC, Sassicaia and the Super Tuscans.

When Wine Changed the Story of Bolgheri

One of my favorite moments with guests is explaining that Bolgheri was not always one of Italy's most prestigious wine regions.

Its international reputation is relatively recent.

Here, along the Tuscan coast, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot found an unexpected home. The influence of the Mediterranean, the particular mosaic of soils and the vision of a handful of pioneering producers eventually changed the perception of what Tuscan wine could be.

And at the heart of that story is Sassicaia.

Even guests who arrive knowing very little about Bolgheri often recognize the name. For serious wine lovers, of course, arriving here can feel very different. They may have Sassicaia, Ornellaia or other Bolgheri wines in their cellar at home and have been waiting years to see where these wines are actually born.

I love both kinds of guests.

Wine should never feel like an examination. My philosophy has always been that wine is sharing, and a wine tour should be educational, but it should also be fun.

More Than Getting from One Winery to Another

This is also why I believe there is an important difference between hiring a driver for the day and experiencing Bolgheri with a wine guide.

A professional driver is essential, particularly when wine tasting is involved. For our shore excursions, we arrange a licensed private driver and comfortable Mercedes transportation from Livorno Port.

But the driver's responsibility is transportation.

Our responsibility is Bolgheri.

We personally design the day, choose the wineries according to each guest's interests, make the reservations and accompany our guests through the wine region.

We talk about the wines, but also about the people behind them.

We explain why Cabernet Sauvignon can taste so different here from Bordeaux or Napa Valley. We talk about the Mediterranean climate, soils, vintages, Bolgheri DOC regulations and the personalities who helped transform this small agricultural area into one of the most exciting wine regions in Italy.

Sometimes the conversation becomes wonderfully technical. Other times we simply talk about what we like in the glass.

Two Wineries, Two Different Stories

For guests arriving from Livorno Port, I normally prefer two winery visits rather than trying to fit too much into one day.

I have never believed that seeing more necessarily means experiencing more.

Two carefully chosen estates allow us to slow down.

Whenever possible, I like creating contrast: perhaps a small family-run winery where you can feel the personal connection with the vineyards, followed by a more established Bolgheri estate.

The important thing is that the wineries make sense for the people sitting in front of me.

And Then, There Is Bolgheri

I would never want someone to come here, visit two wineries and leave without experiencing the village itself.

Driving along the famous Viale dei Cipressi toward Bolgheri is still special, even when you have done it hundreds of times.

At the end of the avenue, the road passes beneath the castle and suddenly you are inside a tiny village where wine, history, poetry and everyday Tuscan life coexist within just a few streets.

We might stop at an enoteca, look inside one of the small artisan shops or simply take a moment to enjoy the atmosphere.

And, of course, there is lunch.

Food is part of understanding a wine region, so depending on the guests and the rhythm of the day, we might choose a traditional local restaurant or an informal enoteca where the wine list becomes another opportunity to discover Bolgheri.

A Different Tuscany for Cruise Guests

One of the things I hear from cruise guests is that they hadn't realized how close Bolgheri was to Livorno.

And this is perhaps one of the area's greatest advantages as a shore excursion.

Rather than spending hours travelling inland, wine lovers can be in Bolgheri in less than an hour, surrounded by vineyards and preparing for their first tasting.

It gives us time.

Time to enjoy Tuscany rather than simply trying to see as much of it as possible.

Of course, we never forget that there is a ship waiting in Livorno. Every shore excursion is planned carefully around the cruise schedule, and our private driver takes guests comfortably back to the port at the end of the day.

Livorno to Bolgheri — A Journey I Know Well

Perhaps I am sentimental about this particular tour.

When I meet guests who have just arrived in Livorno and welcome them to Bolgheri, I am connecting two places that represent two different chapters of my own life.

Livorno is where my story began.

Bolgheri is where wine became much more than something in my glass. It became my profession, my studies, my community and eventually the place from which I could share my passion with people arriving from all over the world.

Today, as a DipWSET and founder of Bolgheri Wine Tours, one of the greatest pleasures of my work is watching someone begin the morning knowing very little about Bolgheri and return to their ship talking about a producer they discovered, a wine they loved or something they learned about the region.

And sometimes the serious wine collectors surprise me too.

They arrive because they know the labels.

I hope they leave knowing a little more about the stories behind them.
