Where is Bolgheri?

Bolgheri is a small medieval village on the Tuscan coast, in the province of Livorno. Surrounded by vineyards and only a few kilometres from the Mediterranean Sea, it is at the heart of the Bolgheri DOC wine region.

What is Bolgheri famous for?

Bolgheri is internationally known for its exceptional wines and for changing the history of modern Italian winemaking. It is the birthplace of Sassicaia and home to some of Italy's most celebrated Super Tuscan wines.

The region is particularly associated with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot, although producers also work with other grape varieties.

What are Super Tuscan wines?

The term "Super Tuscan" emerged to describe innovative Tuscan wines that did not always follow the traditional appellation rules of their time.

Bolgheri played a fundamental role in this story. Sassicaia became its most famous pioneer, followed by other wines that helped establish the Tuscan coast among the world's great wine regions.

Today, "Super Tuscan" is not an official wine classification, but it remains a widely used term.

Can I visit wineries in Bolgheri?

Yes, but most Bolgheri wineries require advance reservations and many do not accept walk-in visitors.

Experiences vary considerably, from intimate family-run estates to internationally renowned wineries. This is why we believe the choice of winery should reflect your interests rather than simply selecting the most famous names.

Can I visit Sassicaia?

Sassicaia is produced by Tenuta San Guido, which is not normally open to the general public for traditional winery visits.

However, there are opportunities in the Bolgheri area to taste Sassicaia, including local restaurants and wine shops. During our tours, we also explain the fascinating history of the wine and its importance to Bolgheri.

How many wineries should I visit in one day?

For most guests, we recommend two wineries.

Wine is not something we believe should be rushed. Two carefully selected visits leave time to understand each estate, taste properly, enjoy lunch and discover Bolgheri village.

Visiting more wineries does not necessarily mean experiencing more.

How much does a wine tasting in Bolgheri cost?

Prices vary significantly according to the winery and type of experience.

Small family-run estates generally offer more accessible tastings, while prestigious estates, private experiences, vertical tastings and mature vintages can cost considerably more.

When designing a private tour, we select wineries according to both your wine interests and your preferred budget.

Do I need a car to visit Bolgheri wineries?

Yes. The wineries are spread throughout the countryside and public transportation is not practical for visiting several estates.

For a wine-tasting day, we strongly recommend professional private transportation so everyone can enjoy the wines safely and comfortably.

What is the difference between a private driver and a wine guide?

A private driver takes care of transportation. A professional wine guide takes care of your wine experience.

Are your tours suitable for serious wine collectors?

Yes. For knowledgeable wine lovers, we can design more in-depth itineraries focusing on specific producers, vineyards, terroir, vintages and winemaking styles.

Where available, we can also explore premium, mature or vertical tasting experiences.

Can you arrange lunch?

Yes. Food is an essential part of experiencing Tuscany.

Depending on your itinerary, we can reserve one of our favorite local restaurants or enotecas in Bolgheri and the surrounding area, from informal traditional lunches to more refined gastronomic experiences.

Can I buy and ship wine home?

Yes. Many wineries offer direct wine sales, and international shipping may be available depending on your destination and the producer.

How far is Bolgheri from Livorno Port?

Bolgheri is less than one hour by car from Livorno, making it an excellent destination for cruise passengers looking for a private Tuscan wine shore excursion.

Do you offer private shore excursions from Livorno cruise port?

Yes. We arrange private pickup directly from Livorno Port with a licensed professional driver and Mercedes vehicle.

Once in Bolgheri, your dedicated local wine expert guides your experience, usually including two winery visits, lunch and time in Bolgheri village.

Is Bolgheri a good alternative to Florence for a Livorno shore excursion?

For wine lovers, absolutely.

Florence is extraordinary, but Bolgheri offers a very different experience. From Livorno, you can reach the Bolgheri wine country in less than one hour, giving you more time to visit wineries, enjoy lunch and experience the Tuscan countryside rather than spending much of your shore day travelling.

What is the best time of year to visit Bolgheri?

Bolgheri can be enjoyed throughout much of the year, and every season offers a different atmosphere.

Spring brings green vineyards and mild temperatures, summer is lively and Mediterranean, while September and the harvest period offer a particularly exciting glimpse into the working life of the wineries. Winter has its own vibes too!

Advance reservations are especially important during the busiest periods.

Are Bolgheri wineries open on Sundays?

If your only available day is Sunday, contact us in advance so we can explore the options available for your date.

How far in advance should I book a Bolgheri wine tour?

As early as possible, particularly if you are travelling during the spring, summer or harvest season or wish to visit specific prestigious estates.

The best winery experiences and professional private drivers can become fully booked well in advance.

Can you create a wine itinerary if we prefer to explore independently?
