How to Reach Bolgheri: Finding Our Little Corner of Wine Paradise
As founder of Bolgheri Wine Tours, one of the first questions my guests always ask is: “How do we reach Bolgheri?”
π Bolgheri is a small medieval village in coastal Tuscany, about 1 hour south of Pisa, 2 hours from Florence, and 3 hours north of Rome.
Bolgheri is in the Maremma area of the Livorno province, nestled between the Tyrrhenian Sea and the rolling Tuscan hills. On the map of Italy, it sits almost exactly halfway between Florence and Rome, making it an easy stop for travelers exploring Tuscany.
How to Reach Bolgheri
Planning a visit to Bolgheri? Here’s everything you need to know to get here smoothly:
π By Car
The car is by far the most flexible way to reach Bolgheri. From the coastal highway SS1 Aurelia (E80), take the Donoratico/Bolgheri exit and follow the signs. Within minutes you’ll be driving down the Viale dei Cipressi, the iconic cypress avenue leading straight to the village.
- From Pisa Airport (PSA): approx. 1 hour
- From Florence Airport (FLR): approx. 2 hours
- From Rome Fiumicino (FCO): approx. 3.5 hours
π By Train
The nearest station is Donoratico–Castagneto Carducci, on the Pisa–Rome line. From there, it’s a 10–15 minute drive to Bolgheri. You’ll need to pre-book a taxi or private transfer, as public transport options are limited.
π By Bus
Local buses connect Donoratico with Castagneto Carducci, but services to Bolgheri itself are irregular and not ideal for visitors on a tight schedule.
π Taxis & Transfers
Important: there are no Uber or ride-sharing services in this area. Taxis exist but should be reserved in advance, as they are few in number, especially during weekends or high season. Many travelers find it easiest to arrange a private driver or join a wine tour with transport included.
βοΈ By Air
- Pisa International Airport (Galileo Galilei): the closest hub, well connected with European destinations.
- Florence (Peretola): a good choice for central Italy arrivals.
- Rome Fiumicino (FCO): convenient for intercontinental flights.
π Tip for wine lovers: If you plan to visit wineries (and taste freely!), book a private driver or guided tour — it’s the most relaxed and responsible way to explore Bolgheri.
